Because of extreme heat cycles and the corrosive environment of modern diesel exhaust systems, the EGT sensors become very difficult to remove without damaging the exhaust system. The shape and depth of the fittings are such that standard re-threaders cannot be used. These re-threaders are designed with a specific geometry that allows them to clean-up most types of damaged EGT sensor bungs and allow a new sensor to be installed without needing to replace the very expensive exhaust system.
